    Background:

    • Mobius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by facial paralysis.
    • Facial paralysis in Mobius syndrome prevents individuals from producing voluntary facial expressions.
    • The ability to recognize facial expressions is crucial for social interaction.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate facial expression recognition in individuals with Mobius syndrome.
    • To determine if the inability to produce facial expressions affects their recognition abilities.
    • To explore the relationship between facial expression production and recognition.

    Main Methods:

    • Three participants with Mobius syndrome identified emotions from static facial expression images.
    • Participants also recognized emotions from computer-morphed facial expressions.
    • Standardized facial expression sets were used for testing.

    Main Results:

    • None of the participants showed significant impairment in recognizing static facial expressions.
    • One participant had a significant impairment, another a borderline deficit, and one was unimpaired in recognizing morphed facial expressions.
