Background:

Anecdotal evidence suggests enhanced estimation abilities in autistic individuals, but empirical validation is lacking.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by challenges in social interaction and communication, alongside restricted interests and repetitive behaviors.

Observation:

Two children diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) were assessed for estimation abilities across multiple quantifiable dimensions.
Performance was compared against age- and IQ-matched neurotypical children.

Findings:

One participant (G.T.) demonstrated exceptional skills in estimating numerosity, time, weight, surface area, length, and distance.
The other participant (K.T.) showed superior performance in rank estimation but average abilities in other areas.
These results indicate that some individuals with ASD may possess highly specialized and superior estimation capabilities.

Implications:

The findings support the concept of "veridical mapping" as a potential mechanism underlying special abilities in ASD.
