Summary

The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) reliably determines hearing thresholds and hearing loss levels, correlating well with pure-tone audiometry (PTA). This makes ASSR an excellent complementary tool for audiological assessments.

Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Neuroscience
  • Otoacoustic Emissions

Background:

  • Auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is an increasingly important audiological test.
  • Previous studies noted discrepancies between ASSR and pure-tone audiometry (PTA) hearing thresholds.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate ASSR reliability for frequency-specific hearing thresholds.
  • Correlate ASSR-determined thresholds with PTA findings.
  • Assess ASSR reliability across different hearing loss levels and configurations.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 46 subjects (92 ears).
  • Subjects grouped by hearing loss level and audiometric configuration.
  • Hearing thresholds measured using both PTA and ASSR.

Main Results:

  • Small overall differences between ASSR and PTA thresholds (2.5–4.4 dB across frequencies).
  • High correlation between ASSR and PTA thresholds across all hearing loss levels and configurations.
  • Differences <10 dB in 85% of subjects.

Conclusions:

  • ASSR is a reliable complementary method for determining hearing thresholds.
  • ASSR accurately assesses hearing loss level and audiometric configuration.
  • ASSR provides valuable data for audiological evaluations.
