Human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection can cause myocarditis in children. Molecular analysis of PVB19 strains in three pediatric cases revealed no specific virological markers linked to the disease course.

- Human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection is an infrequent cause of acute myocarditis.
- Three pediatric cases of PVB19-associated myocarditis occurred within a short period and geographic area.
Observation:
- A molecular epidemiologic investigation was conducted to identify potential virological factors influencing PVB19 infection course.
- PVB19 DNA was detected in multiple samples from each of the three children diagnosed with myocarditis.
Findings:
- Phylogenetic analysis of nearly complete PVB19 genome sequences (4265nt) revealed that all identified strains belonged to genotype 1a.
- Sequence comparison showed minor variations between strains from different patients (58-74 substitutions) but 100% similarity among strains from the same patient.
- No specific virological markers associated with myocarditis were identified in these pediatric cases.
Implications:
- Viral myocarditis, particularly from PVB19, may be an underdiagnosed cause of post-inflammatory cardiomyopathy.
- Further research is needed to understand the pathogenesis of PVB19-associated myocarditis and identify potential virological or host-related risk factors.
