Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

Summary

Ocular parameters like axial length and anterior chamber depth showed moderate correlation with amplitude of accommodation in young myopes. However, no significant correlation was found overall in the peri-presbyopic age group.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between ocular parameters (axial length, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness) and amplitude of accommodation (AA) in the peri-presbyopic age group (35-50 years).

Main Methods:

  • A study of 316 right eyes from patients aged 35-50 with best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20, J1.
  • Amplitude of accommodation (AA) measured via near point of accommodation.
  • Ocular parameters including axial length (AL), central anterior chamber depth (CACD), and lens thickness (LT) were measured.

Main Results:

  • Moderate correlation (r=0.56) between AL and AA, and (r=0.53) between CACD and AA observed in myopes aged 35-39.
  • No significant correlation found between AL, CACD, and AA in other age groups or overall.
  • No significant correlation between LT and AA across different age groups and refractive errors.

Conclusions:

  • No significant correlation exists between amplitude of accommodation and ocular parameters such as anterior chamber depth, axial length, and lens thickness in the peri-presbyopic population.
