Summary

Clinically diagnosed vasitis, or inflammation of the vas deferens, may be linked to prior herniorrhaphy and prostatectomy. Medical management with anti-inflammatories and antibiotics showed promise in improving symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate clinical factors associated with clinically symptomatic vasitis.
  • To analyze associated risk factors from patient history, physical examination, and clinical course.
  • To examine clinical care patterns and treatment effectiveness.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective series of 11 patients with clinically symptomatic vasitis.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, medical history, and prior surgical procedures.
  • Evaluation of clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, and treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Mean patient age was 47 years; mean affected vas deferens diameter was 0.97 cm.
  • Associated procedures included herniorrhaphy (4), prostatectomy (2), perianal fistulectomy (1), and testicular biopsy (1).
  • Three patients were HIV positive; six were active smokers. Six patients improved with anti-inflammatories and antibiotics.

Conclusions:

  • Prior herniorrhaphy and prostatectomy may be risk factors for clinical vasitis.
  • HIV infection might also be a risk factor.
  • Anti-inflammatories and antibiotics show potential as effective treatments, warranting further investigation.
