Summary

Homeopathic treatments showed effectiveness in 31 of 48 studies on animal models and cell lines for various infections. Further clinical trials are suggested to confirm these findings for infectious disease treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To search for effective agents for the treatment of infections in animals or infected cell lines.

Main Methods:

  • Searched the HomBRex database for eligible experiments.
  • Reviewed and analyzed 48 experiments published between 1832 and 2009.
  • Included studies on bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and metazoa.

Main Results:

  • 31 out of 48 experiments indicated effectiveness of at least one homeopathic medicine.
  • Homeopathic medicines were selected based on the similia principle in 8 experiments.
  • Mice were the most common host organisms, used in 13 experiments.

Conclusions:

  • Findings may encourage clinical trials for complementary treatments of infectious diseases.
  • Replication of all reviewed experiments is needed.
  • Transferability of in vitro results to in vivo outcomes requires further investigation.
