Summary

Outsourcing non-core services does not always improve non-profit hospital profitability. While teaching hospitals may see benefits, urban hospitals do not, and regional effects vary. Financial viability requires careful consideration of outsourcing strategies.

To examine the relationship between managerial outsourcing decisions and profitability in a multi-state sample of non-profit hospitals.
