Summary

To prevent arthroscopic lens damage, keep instrument tips smaller than half the visual field. A 2 mm safe distance is achievable when instrument tips are less than half the visual field.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the relationship between arthroscopic instrument tip diameter and lens-to-instrument distance.
  • To establish guidelines for preventing arthroscope lens damage during arthroscopic procedures.

  • A custom device simulated arthroscopic portals for imaging.
  • Shaver tips of various sizes (2.5-5.5 mm) were imaged with different arthroscopes (4 mm and 2.7 mm).
  • Images were captured at distances from 0 to 10 mm, evaluating relative instrument diameter and lens proximity.

  • Excellent reliability was observed in measuring relative shaver tip diameters.
