Radiotherapy for multiple myeloma with skin involvement
1Département de Radio-Oncologie, L'Hôtel-Dieu de Québec, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Québec, Quebec City, QC.
Skin metastasis in multiple myeloma is rare and indicates a high tumor burden. Radiation therapy can reduce tumor bulk, but systemic treatment complications may still be fatal.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Dermatology
Background:
- Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells.
- Skin metastasis from multiple myeloma is uncommon and signifies advanced disease.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a rare case of multiple myeloma with cutaneous involvement.
- To discuss the management and outcome of this rare presentation.
Main Methods:
- Case report of a patient with known multiple myeloma.
- Utilized limited-field radiation treatment for tumor debulking.
Main Results:
- The patient presented with cutaneous lesions on the right leg.
- Radiation treatment successfully reduced tumor bulk.
- The patient unfortunately died from systemic treatment complications.
Conclusions:
- Cutaneous involvement in multiple myeloma is a sign of high tumor burden.
- While localized treatment can help debulk tumors, systemic disease progression and treatment complications remain significant challenges.
