Summary

Nosocomial Acinetobacter calcoaceticus bacteremia, particularly the Anitratus type, occurred frequently early in hospitalization. Most strains were resistant to common antibiotics but sensitive to ciprofloxacin and imipenem.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Clinical Microbiology
  • Hospital Epidemiology

Background:

  • Nosocomial Acinetobacter calcoaceticus bacteremia is a significant concern in healthcare settings.
  • The Anitratus type has been implicated in both endemic and outbreak scenarios.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the characteristics of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus bacteremia.
  • To compare Acinetobacter bacteremia with other Gram-negative bacillary bacteremia.
  • To identify risk factors and outcomes associated with Acinetobacter bacteremia.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 40 episodes of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus bacteremia over 4 years.
  • Comparison with a control group of 28 patients with Gram-negative bacillary bacteremia.
  • Identification of causative strains, sites of infection, associated microorganisms, and antimicrobial susceptibility.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • An outbreak of 12 cases occurred in an intensive care unit.
  • The respiratory system was the most common infection site.
  • Most Acinetobacter strains showed resistance to cotrimoxazole, beta-lactams, and aminoglycosides, but were sensitive to ciprofloxacin and imipenem.
  • Acinetobacter bacteremia occurred earlier in hospitalization and in patients with less severe underlying diseases compared to controls.
  • Inappropriate antibiotic treatment was common.

Conclusions:

  • Acinetobacter calcoaceticus bacteremia presents unique epidemiological features.
  • Effective antibiotic choices include ciprofloxacin and imipenem.
  • Early recognition and appropriate management are crucial for improving outcomes.
