Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection is a global health concern.
  • Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder with multifactorial etiology.
  • The potential link between infectious agents and psychiatric conditions is an area of ongoing research.

Observation:

  • Five male patients, aged 22-31, presented with acute schizophrenia as the first clinical manifestation of HIV.
  • All patients were intravenous drug users.
  • Four patients later developed opportunistic infections and AIDS-Dementia Complex.

Findings:

  • Acute schizophrenia may be an early indicator of HIV infection.
  • A potential biological association between HIV carriage and schizophrenia is suggested.
  • HIV infection warrants consideration in the differential diagnosis of acute schizophrenia.

Implications:

  • This case series highlights the importance of considering HIV in the differential diagnosis of acute schizophrenia, particularly in at-risk populations.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the biological mechanisms underlying the observed association.
  • Early diagnosis and intervention in HIV-infected individuals presenting with psychiatric symptoms may improve patient outcomes.
