Background:

  • Individuals in a post-coma state often have extensive multiple disabilities, limiting their ability to communicate and make choices.
  • Existing computer-assisted programs may require adaptation to meet the specific needs of this population.

Observation:

  • An adapted computer-assisted program was developed to present stimulus events to a post-coma individual.
  • The program allowed choice selection through a vocalization response, triggering presentation or repetition of stimuli.

Findings:

  • The adapted program effectively promoted high levels of choice for preferred stimuli.
  • Minimal to no selection of non-preferred stimuli was observed.
  • Positive emotional indicators (happiness) were frequently noted during sessions.

Implications:

  • Computer-assisted programs can be successfully adapted for individuals with extensive disabilities following a coma.
  • This approach offers a viable method for enhancing autonomy and quality of life for severely disabled individuals.
  • Further research into adapting assistive technologies for neurorehabilitation is warranted.
