Summary

This study reveals that our perception of gaze direction directly influences social attention. Impairing gaze perception specifically reduces the gaze cueing effect, linking these cognitive mechanisms.

Background:

The relationship between gaze perception and social attention is not fully understood.
It remains unclear if gaze cueing relies on general attention or specialized gaze mechanisms.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the direct link between gaze perception mechanisms and social attention.
To test whether manipulating gaze perception affects gaze cueing.

Main Methods:

Employed a gaze adaptation paradigm to systematically alter observers' perception of gaze direction.
Conducted experiments manipulating perception of averted gaze stimuli and pointing gestures.

Main Results:

Gaze cueing was significantly reduced when the perception of specific averted gaze stimuli was impaired.
Adaptation to a pointing stimulus did not affect gaze cueing, indicating specificity.

Conclusions:

Findings suggest that gaze perception mechanisms directly influence the orienting of social attention.
The results challenge the notion of a general-purpose attentional mechanism driving gaze cueing.
