Bullying02:04

Bullying

A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is bullying.

Bulimia Nervosa01:30

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by a cyclical pattern of binge-and-purge eating pattern. It generally involves an episode of binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative use, or fasting, to prevent weight gain. Despite often maintaining a normal weight, individuals with bulimia are intensely preoccupied with their body image and harbor an overwhelming fear of gaining weight. This can contribute to the...
Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...
Social Facilitation01:04

Social Facilitation

Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled.
Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping02:05

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about the way you...

Summary

Children with poor motor skills, particularly those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), face a higher risk of being bullied. Early intervention for clumsy children can help prevent victimization.

Area of Science:

  • Developmental psychology
  • Clinical psychology
  • Pediatrics

Background:

  • Poor social skills are linked to bullying, especially in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
  • Clumsiness and poor performance in physical education (PE) are often associated with social difficulties and may increase the risk of bully victimization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between childhood physical education (PE) performance and bully victimization.
  • To explore the association between autistic traits, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) traits, and PE performance in relation to bullying risk.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty-nine healthy university students retrospectively reported on their childhood PE performance and experiences of bully victimization.
  • Participants completed questionnaires assessing ADHD and ASD traits to evaluate personality factors linked to bullying risk.

Main Results:

  • Below-average PE performance was a significant risk factor for being bullied (OR=3.6, p=0.017).
  • Poor PE performance correlated strongly with longer duration (p=0.007) and higher frequency (p=0.008) of victimization.
  • Autistic traits were associated with lower PE performance.

Conclusions:

  • Impaired motor skills represent a substantial risk factor for experiencing bullying.
  • Preventive programs targeting clumsy children could mitigate bullying among vulnerable populations.
