Background:

Day surgery units offer potential benefits including reduced cancellations, lower infection rates, cost-effectiveness, and improved patient satisfaction.
This study describes the experience of the first UK unit to regularly perform thoracic surgery in a dedicated day surgery unit.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of performing thoracic surgery in a dedicated day surgery unit.
To report the initial experience and outcomes of thoracic procedures conducted in a day surgery setting.

Main Methods:

Prospective data collection from September 2007 to December 2009.
Patients observed for 1 hour post-surgery, with chest drains attached to ambulatory devices for discharge if needed.
Postoperative review and discharge within 4-6 hours if appropriate.

Main Results:

Ninety-eight patients underwent thoracic surgery, with a mean age of 53.0 years; 61.2% were male.
Procedures included mediastinal (29.6%), video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) (31.6%), and other (38.8%) interventions.
Overall, 6.2% of patients required admission post-procedure, with no reported deaths.

Conclusions:

Thoracic surgery can be safely and effectively performed in day surgery units with appropriate patient selection.
This approach facilitates the fast-tracking of increasingly complex surgical procedures.
