Summary

Radiation recall is an inflammatory reaction in previously irradiated skin triggered by chemotherapy. Awareness and a longer interval between radiation and chemotherapy may minimize this poorly understood phenomenon.

  • Radiation recall is an acute inflammatory reaction in previously irradiated tissues.
  • It occurs when chemotherapy agents are administered after radiotherapy, often poorly understood.

Observation:

  • Diverse anticancer drugs, including anthracyclines (doxorubicin), taxanes (docetaxel, paclitaxel), and antimetabolites (gemcitabine, capecitabine), have been linked to radiation recall.
  • Data primarily from case reports limit understanding of true incidence and predictive factors.

Findings:

  • Radiation recall reactions are drug-specific and unpredictable for individual patients.
  • No identifiable drug characteristics predict radiation recall; it can occur with any drug class post-radiotherapy.
