Summary

Pituitary carcinomas are rare, and distinguishing them from adenomas is difficult. This study details a malignant prolactinoma case with aggressive recurrence and bone metastasis.

Abnormal Proliferation02:23

Abnormal Proliferation

Under normal conditions, most adult cells remain in a non-proliferative state unless stimulated by internal or external factors to replace lost cells. Abnormal cell proliferation is a condition in which the cell's growth exceeds and is uncoordinated with normal cells. In such situations, cell division persists in the same excessive manner even after cessation of the stimuli, leading to persistent tumors. The tumor arises from the damaged cells that replicate to pass the damage to the daughter...

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Pituitary carcinomas are exceptionally rare adenohypophyseal tumors.
  • Histological features alone cannot reliably differentiate pituitary adenomas from carcinomas.
  • Malignant prolactinomas, a subtype, present unique diagnostic and clinical challenges.

Observation:

  • A patient initially diagnosed with a prolactin-secreting pituitary adenoma exhibited an aggressive clinical course.
  • The tumor demonstrated repeated recurrences and ultimately metastasized to multiple bones.
  • Clinico-pathological and immunohistological features were analyzed across primary, recurrent, and metastatic tumor stages.

Findings:

  • The study describes the clinico-pathological and immunohistological characteristics of a malignant prolactinoma.

Endoscopic Endonasal Trans-sphenoidal Approach: Minimally Invasive Surgery for Pituitary Adenomas

Published on: January 17, 2018

  • MIB-1 and p53 labeling indices were compared between the primary adenoma, recurrent invasive adenoma, and metastatic tumor.
  • These markers may offer insights into tumor behavior and progression.
  • Implications:

    • Understanding the features of malignant prolactinoma is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.
    • This case highlights the potential for aggressive behavior and metastasis in pituitary adenomas.
    • Further research into diagnostic markers for pituitary carcinomas is warranted to improve patient outcomes.
