The Tongue and Taste Buds

The surface of the tongue is covered with various small bumps called papillae, which either distribute what has been ingested (filiform papillae) or contain the sensory taste (or gustatory) receptor cells (fungiform, circumvallate, and foliate papillae). Embedded within each taste-related papilla are the taste buds—clusters of 30 to 100 gustatory receptor cells.

Summary

Context:

Perillae Fructus is a traditional medicinal herb requiring robust quality control.
Existing quality specifications may lack sufficient accuracy and reproducibility.

Purpose:

To develop and validate reliable identification and assay methods for Perillae Fructus.
To establish accurate quality control specifications for Perillae Fructus.

Summary:

Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) was used for the identification of rosmarinic acid, luteolin, and apigenin.
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was employed to quantify rosmarinic acid content, demonstrating a linear calibration curve (R2 = 0.9999) within the 19.4-194.2 µg/mL range.
The assay achieved an average recovery of 99.8% (RSD 3.6%), confirming accuracy, sensitivity, and reproducibility.
