[A case of atonic partial seizure].

Summary

A rare case of atonic partial seizures in a child was successfully treated by adjusting anticonvulsant medication. This highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis for pediatric epilepsy management.

Background:

A 4-year-old girl presented with recurrent generalized tonic-clonic seizures and was on anticonvulsant medication.
She subsequently developed atonic partial seizures affecting the right leg and impaired equilibrium.

Observation:

The patient experienced abrupt episodes of mild right leg cataplexy and a flail trunk while standing.
Clinical presentation, physiological findings, and electroencephalogram (EEG) confirmed the cataplexy as epileptic seizures.

Findings:

The diagnosis of atonic partial seizures was established, unusually associated with non-epileptic equilibrium impairment.
Cerebral cortex dysfunction was suspected as the underlying cause for the associated equilibrium impairment.

Increasing anticonvulsant dosage led to complete resolution of all symptoms.
This case underscores the rarity of atonic partial seizures and the need for precise diagnosis in pediatric epilepsy.
