Sleep-Wake Cycles

Sleep is an essential physiological process vital to maintaining overall well-being. The reticular activating system (RAS), a network of neurons in the brainstem, regulates wakefulness and sleep. While it may seem passive, sleep consists of distinct cycles, each with its unique characteristics and functions. Two key sleep phases are non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and  rapid eye movement (REM).

Background:

  • To characterize the developmental trajectory of CAP in this age group.

  • A descriptive study involving 12 healthy children (6 girls, 6 boys) aged 12-24 months.
  • Standard polysomnography was conducted in a pediatric sleep laboratory.
  • Sleep stages and CAP were analyzed using international guidelines.

  • The average CAP rate was 25.78 ± 10.18%, showing a linear increase of 2% per month.
  • CAP rate correlated with age (R² = 0.91), from 12% at 12 months to 35% at 24 months.
