Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the functional outcomes and recurrence rates after surgical excision of scapular osteochondromas.
  • To assess patient satisfaction and pain levels following the procedure.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of osteochondroma excisions from 1994-2007.
  • Postoperative assessment using Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) survey and a self-report questionnaire.
  • Analysis of presenting symptoms, lesion location, and recurrence rates.

Main Results:

  • Eight osteochondromas were excised in patients with a mean age of 21.63 years.
  • Common presenting symptoms included pain, mass, and scapular pseudowinging.
  • At a mean follow-up of 4.17 years, 88% had no recurrence.
  • 75% reported no/mild pain with activities, and 75% were very satisfied with the results.
  • The average DASH score was 11.7.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical excision of scapular osteochondromas can yield favorable functional outcomes.
  • Recurrence rates are low, and patient satisfaction is generally high.
  • Near-normal functional outcomes can be expected following resection of these tumors.
