Obesity01:24

Obesity

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in adipocytes...
Exercise and Muscle Performance01:27

Exercise and Muscle Performance

Exercise induces a range of adaptations in muscle tissue, depending on the type and duration of activity. Such physical training can be broadly categorized into two types: endurance exercises and resistance exercises.
Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...

Drug Dosing: Obese Patients

In the United States, obesity is a prominent concern. It is linked to heightened mortality rates due to increased occurrences of conditions such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and diabetes compared to nonobese individuals. A patient is classified as obese if their actual body weight surpasses the ideal or desirable body weight by 20%, based on Metropolitan Life Insurance Company data. Ideal body weights consider average weights and heights for males and females...
Mass and Weight01:19

Mass and Weight

Mass and weight are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation. For example,  medical records often show our weight in kilograms, but never in the correct units of newtons. In physics, however, there is an important distinction. Weight is the pull of the Earth on an object. It depends on the distance from the center of the Earth. Weight dramatically varies if we leave the Earth's surface, unlike mass, which does not vary with location. On the Moon, for example, the acceleration due to...

Summary

A 12-week workplace intervention improved weight, body fat, and blood pressure in employees. These health improvements occurred regardless of whether the program was delivered in-person or online.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Preventive Medicine
  • Clinical Nutrition

Background:

  • Workplace interventions can address health issues in employees.
  • Obesity and cardiovascular disease risk factors are prevalent in academic health science center employees.
  • Delivery methods for health interventions may impact effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a 12-week workplace intervention (WIP) for overweight/obese employees.
  • To assess the impact of WIP on energy intake, weight, physical activity, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.
  • To compare the effectiveness of in-person versus internet-based delivery methods for the WIP.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective clinical trial comparing in-person and internet-based WIP delivery.
  • Intervention included identical dietitian visits at baseline and weeks 6, 12, and 26.
  • Primary outcomes were changes in weight, physical activity, and CVD risk.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in treatment effect between delivery methods.
  • Significant within-subject improvements observed at week 12 in weight, waist circumference, body fat, HRQOL, and energy intake.
  • Further improvements noted at week 26, including systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Conclusions:

  • A 12-week workplace intervention led to significant improvements in several health markers.
  • The observed health benefits were independent of the delivery method (in-person vs. internet-based).
  • Workplace interventions are effective in improving employee health outcomes.
