Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Localized prostate cancer (PCa) requires effective treatment options.
  • Perineal radical prostatectomy (PRP) is a less common surgical approach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present the uncommon surgical procedure of perineal radical prostatectomy (PRP).
  • To evaluate the outcomes of PRP for localized prostate cancer.

Main Methods:

  • Six patients with localized prostate cancer underwent PRP between 2006 and 2010.
  • Patient characteristics included average age 65 years, average PSA 7.8 ng/ml, stages pT2b-pT2c, and Gleason score 4-7.

Main Results:

  • All patients achieved negative surgical margins.
  • Average operative time was 109 minutes with 525 ml blood loss.
