Background:

School health services are crucial for student well-being and academic success.
The absence of a school nurse can disrupt essential health services.
Limited research exists on the utilization and impact of nurse substitutes in schools.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the utilization of nurse substitutes in Illinois school settings.
To identify the types of personnel covering school health offices in the absence of a registered nurse.
To understand the extent of registered nurse availability during school nurse absences.

Main Methods:

A descriptive study design was employed.
A sample of 148 Illinois school nurses was recruited.
Data were collected via a 20-item online survey.

Main Results:

In the absence of a school nurse, 10.1% of health offices were unstaffed.
37.8% were covered by nurses with concurrent responsibilities.
25.7% were staffed by non-licensed personnel, resulting in 73.6% of assignments lacking immediate registered nurse availability.

Conclusions:

A significant portion of Illinois school health offices lack adequate registered nurse coverage during absences.
The reliance on non-licensed personnel or overburdened nurses raises concerns about the quality of care.
Further research is needed to address barriers and ensure consistent access to qualified school nursing services.
