Peripheral Artery Disease V: Postoperative Nursing Management

During the postoperative period, it is crucial to focus on maintaining circulation, identifying and managing potential complications, and planning for discharge.Nursing AssessmentVital signs monitoring: Regularly monitor vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature, to detect early signs of complications such as bleeding and infection.Circulation assessment: Monitor pulses, perform Doppler assessments, and check capillary refill, color, temperature, and...

Peripheral Artery Disease III: Interprofessional Care

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is characterized by narrowed arteries that diminish blood flow to the extremities. Effective management of PAD requires an interprofessional approach involving various healthcare professionals. The critical aspects of interprofessional care for PAD patients focus on risk factor modification, drug therapy, exercise therapy, nutrition therapy, critical limb ischemia care, and interventional radiology and surgical procedures. The primary treatment goal for PAD...

Flail Chest-II

Managing flail chest, a condition characterized by a segment of the chest wall moving independently from the rest of the thoracic cage, requires a comprehensive approach. It includes a thorough assessment of the patient's condition, a diagnostic evaluation to determine the extent of the injury, and the implementation of appropriate medical interventions tailored to the individual's needs.

Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...

Cardiomyopathy VII: Pre and Post Operative Nursing Management

Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction who remain symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy may undergo a septal myectomy (Morrow procedure). This procedure involves excising a portion of the hypertrophied septum below the aortic valve using a heart-lung machine to improve blood flow through the LVOT. Effective preoperative and postoperative nursing management ensures successful patient outcomes, minimizes complications, and...

Summary

Single-event multiple level surgery (SEMLS) combined with physical therapy (PT) can improve function in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) when conservative methods fail. This approach offers sustained functional gains beyond 24 months post-surgery.

Therapy Interventions for Upper Limb Amputees Undergoing Selective Nerve Transfers

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Pediatric Rehabilitation
  • Cerebral Palsy Management

Background:

  • Cerebral palsy (CP) often presents with secondary conditions requiring comprehensive management.
  • Conservative treatments may not always suffice for addressing these secondary complications effectively.

Observation:

  • This case report details the surgical procedures of single-event multiple level surgery (SEMLS) for managing secondary conditions in a pediatric patient with CP.
  • Physical therapy (PT) management over 35 months post-SEMLS was documented for an adolescent classified at Gross Motor Function Classification System level II.

Findings:

  • SEMLS, when integrated with PT and robust family support, demonstrated potential for greater functional improvement compared to single-impairment surgical corrections.
  • Outcome measures including the Gross Motor Function Measure-66 and Activity Scale for Kidsperformance38 indicated sustained functional gains, exceeding preoperative levels beyond 24 months post-surgery.

Implications:

  • SEMLS offers a viable surgical strategy for complex cases of cerebral palsy, enhancing functional outcomes.
  • Multidisciplinary rehabilitation, emphasizing teamwork and long-term commitment, is crucial for maximizing patient benefits following SEMLS.
