This study introduces a versatile software tool, Polytact, for modeling and simulating polymer tacticity using seven statistical models. It aids in analyzing polymer structures and understanding polymerization mechanisms through user-friendly graphical representations.
Area of Science:
- Polymer Science
- Computational Chemistry
- Materials Science
Background:
- Understanding polymer tacticity is crucial for predicting material properties.
- Existing methods for modeling tacticity can be complex and limited in scope.
- Advanced computational tools are needed to simulate and analyze polymer microstructures.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a versatile computerized approach for modeling and simulating polymer tacticities.
- To provide a user-friendly software tool (Polytact) for analyzing polymer tacticity.
- To facilitate the comparison of theoretical tacticity distributions with experimental data.
Main Methods:
- Utilized seven single-stage statistical models including Bernoullian, Markovian, and enantiomeric types.
- Developed novel models like "E-B gen" for enantiomorphic control and "E-M1" for pentad distribution.
- Derived equations for converting tacticity probabilities to reactivity ratios for n-ad distributions.
Main Results:
- Introduced the "E-B gen" model for four types of enantiomorphically controlled tacticities.
- Reported the pentad distribution for the "E-M1" model for the first time.
- Applied the models to 20 exemplary polymers and validated with literature data.
Conclusions:
- The Polytact software offers a comprehensive platform for polymer tacticity analysis.
- The developed models and software enable detailed insights into polymerization mechanisms.
- This approach aids in comparing computed n-ad distributions with NMR spectroscopy data.

Types of Step-Growth Polymers: Polyesters
Polyesters are commonly prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; the crude product is known as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or PET. However, polyesters are synthesized industrially by transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol at 150 °C. The two reactants and the polymer...
