    Summary

    Growth hormone secretion is altered in Addison's disease. Idiopathic Addison's patients showed reduced growth hormone response to glucagon and L-DOPA compared to tuberculosis-induced cases.

    Background:

    • Addison's disease, or primary adrenal insufficiency, affects hormone regulation.
    • Growth hormone (GH) secretion dynamics in Addison's disease are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate growth hormone (GH) secretion in patients with Addison's disease.
    • To compare GH response to various stimuli based on the cause of Addison's disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Administered thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), glucagon, and L-DOPA to patients with Addison's disease.
    • Measured plasma GH concentrations following stimulation.
    • Differentiated between idiopathic/auto-immune and tuberculosis-induced Addison's disease.

    Main Results:

    • TRH and ACTH elicited minimal GH changes regardless of Addison's disease etiology.
