The Bone Matrix

Bone contains a relatively small number of cells entrenched in a matrix of collagen fibers that provide an adherent surface for inorganic salt crystals. Both components of the matrix, organic and inorganic, contribute to the unusual properties of bone.   • To clinically and histologically evaluate horse-derived bone mineral for socket preservation.
  • To assess the efficacy of this material in maintaining alveolar ridge dimensions post-extraction.

Main Methods:

  • Four patients with severe periodontitis or apical lesions underwent tooth extraction.
  • Socket preservation was performed using horse-derived bone mineral.
  • Clinical measurements (ridge width, crest height) and histological examination were conducted.

Main Results:

  • Surgical sites healed without complications.
  • No significant difference was observed in ridge width between baseline and 6 months post-procedure.
