Summary

This study found no link between filaggrin null mutations and type I latex allergy in dental professionals. Latex allergy may develop through respiratory exposure rather than direct skin contact.

Background:

  • Natural rubber latex (NRL) contains allergens causing type I latex allergy, a significant occupational risk for healthcare workers.
  • Filaggrin null mutations are known risk factors for type I sensitization to aeroallergens.
  • The potential role of filaggrin mutations in latex allergy development requires investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between filaggrin null mutations and type I latex allergy.
  • To assess if filaggrin mutations increase susceptibility to latex allergy in occupationally exposed individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Genotyping for filaggrin null mutations (R501X and 2282del4) in dentists and dental assistants.
  • Determining latex allergy status via skin prick tests with NRL.
  • Analyzing the correlation between filaggrin mutation carrier status and latex allergy.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant association was found between filaggrin null mutations and type I latex allergy (p=0.24).
