Summary

Single session panendoscopy (SSPE) safely evaluates gastrointestinal issues. For occult blood loss, colonoscopy is recommended first, with esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) used if colonoscopy is normal.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Diagnostic Endoscopy

Background:

  • Single session panendoscopy (SSPE) combines colonoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD).
  • Assessing indications and diagnostic yield is crucial for optimizing endoscopic procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the indications and diagnostic yield of single session panendoscopy (SSPE).
  • To determine the effectiveness of combined colonoscopy and EGD in a single session.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 101 patients undergoing SSPE over 45 months.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, indications for procedures, and endoscopic findings.

Main Results:

  • Common indications included positive occult blood tests, anemia, and altered bowel habits.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Colonoscopy revealed diverticulosis, polyps, and hemorrhoids; EGD showed esophagitis, hiatal hernia, and gastritis.
  • Nine cancers were detected via colonoscopy, primarily right-sided. SSPE identified significant unsuspected lesions.
  • Conclusions:

    • SSPE is a safe and specific diagnostic approach.
    • For occult blood loss, initiating with colonoscopy is advised, followed by EGD if findings are negative.
    • EGD can reveal treatable, unexpected pathologies even when colonoscopy is suggestive of the cause.
