Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Surgical Gastroenterology
Background:
- Advanced pancreatic carcinoma presents significant treatment challenges.
- Palliative surgical interventions are considered for symptom management and quality of life improvement.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the role and outcomes of palliative surgical treatment in patients diagnosed with advanced, unresectable pancreatic carcinoma.
Main Methods:
- A case series of 40 patients with advanced pancreatic carcinoma.
- Palliative procedures included triple bypass and various gastro-jejunostomy combinations.
- Exclusion criteria: resectable tumors and prior gastric/biliary surgery.
Main Results:
- Triple bypass was the most frequent procedure (52.5%).
- Complications included wound infection (7), biliary leakage (3), cholangitis (3), and delayed gastric emptying (5).
- Mortality occurred in 3 patients due to septicemia; median survival was 7.72 months.
Conclusions:
- Surgical palliation for advanced pancreatic cancer can enhance patient quality of life.
- The procedures demonstrated minimum morbidity and mortality in this patient cohort.
