Allergic Reactions: Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction mediated by Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. When IgE binds to allergens, it triggers the release of mediators– histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins from mast cells and basophils. Summary

The Minolta CR-400 Chromameter objectively measures skin prick test reactions, correlating wheal and erythema size with L*, a*, and b* values. This tool enhances the clinical interpretation of allergic rhinitis testing.

Background:

Skin prick testing is a common method for diagnosing allergic rhinitis.
Subjective interpretation of wheal and erythema size can lead to variability in results.
Objective measurement tools are needed to improve diagnostic accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

To objectively quantify changes in wheal and erythema size following skin prick testing.
To evaluate the utility of the Minolta CR-400 Chromameter for this purpose.

Main Methods:

A prospective randomized trial was conducted with 46 patients diagnosed with allergic rhinitis.
Skin prick tests were performed, and measurements were taken using the Minolta CR-400 Chromameter.
L*, a*, and b* color values were recorded to assess skin reaction size.

Main Results:

A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the size of the wheal/erythema and the L*, a*, and b* values (P=.049).
Increased wheal and erythema size corresponded with higher chromameter readings.

Conclusions:

The Minolta CR-400 Chromameter offers an objective and reliable method for measuring skin prick test reactions.
This objective measurement can enhance the clinical interpretation of skin prick test results for allergic rhinitis.
