Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Renal capsule leiomyomas are rare benign tumors.
  • This case highlights the incidental discovery of such a tumor during imaging for unrelated conditions.

Observation:

  • A 49-year-old woman presented with an incidentally detected renal mass.
  • Imaging studies (ultrasound, CT, MRI) revealed a well-delimited, hypoechoic mass in the upper pole of the right kidney.

Findings:

  • Pathological analysis confirmed a low-grade fusocellular proliferation consistent with leiomyoma, positive for smooth muscle markers.
  • The tumor was contiguous with the renal capsule, compressing but not damaging the renal parenchyma.

Implications:

  • Renal leiomyomas should be suspected in asymptomatic, well-defined renal tumors in women of reproductive age.
