Summary

Schistosoma mansoni infection, also known as bilharziasis, shows no significant increase in IgG, IgM, or IgA antibodies. However, specific IgE antibodies significantly increase in both acute and chronic stages of this parasitic disease.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Parasitology

Background:

  • Schistosomiasis, caused by Schistosoma mansoni, is a significant global health concern.
  • Understanding the host immune response, particularly immunoglobulin levels, is crucial for diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate specific and total immunoglobulin antibody levels in patients with Schistosoma mansoni infection.
  • To correlate immunoglobulin levels with the clinical course of acute and chronic bilharziasis.

Main Methods:

  • Quantification of specific and total immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgM, IgA, and IgE antibodies against Schistosoma antigens.
  • Analysis of 44 patients diagnosed with S. mansoni infection, encompassing both acute and chronic phases.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • No significant elevation in parasitic-specific IgG, IgM, and IgA levels was observed in either acute or chronic schistosomiasis.
  • A significant increase in specific IgE antibodies was detected in both acute and chronic stages of bilharziasis.
  • Overall immunoglobulin levels did not correlate with the clinical progression of the infection.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated immunoglobulin levels are not specific to Schistosomiasis infection.
  • Specific IgE antibodies may serve as a potential indicator in acute and chronic bilharziasis, but general immunoglobulin levels lack diagnostic specificity for this parasitic disease.
