Cell-Free DNA Extraction of Vitreous and Aqueous Humor Specimens for Diagnosis and Monitoring of Vitreoretinal Lymphoma

Background:

  • Conjunctival lymphoma is exceedingly rare in pediatric populations.
  • Eyelid and conjunctival masses in children often present diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 13-year-old girl presented with a rapidly growing right lower eyelid mass initially misdiagnosed as a chalazion.
  • The mass's atypical presentation prompted an excisional biopsy for definitive diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Pathological examination confirmed a large B-cell lymphoma.
  • Immunohistochemistry revealed positive CD20 and Ki67 staining.
  • Polymerase chain reaction analysis demonstrated B-cell monoclonality.

Implications:

  • Conjunctival lymphoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pediatric eyelid and conjunctival masses.
  • Prompt biopsy is essential for accurate diagnosis of rare pediatric ocular tumors.
