Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. Background:

  • Eosinophilia, an elevated eosinophil count, is linked to diverse medical conditions.
  • Common causes like allergies, parasitic infections, and hematologic malignancies were excluded.

Observation:

  • A 50-year-old woman presented with abdominal symptoms and blood eosinophilia.
  • Abdominal ultrasound revealed a large pelvic mass, initially suspected as a uterine myoma.

Findings:

  • The pelvic mass was diagnosed as a high-grade ovarian sarcoma.
  • Eosinophilia, a rare paraneoplastic sign in sarcomas, was noted.
  • The pathophysiology of tumor-associated eosinophilia remains unclear.

Implications:

  • This case highlights ovarian sarcoma as a potential cause of paraneoplastic eosinophilia.
