Histone Variants at the Centromere02:30

Histone Variants at the Centromere

Histone variants are the histone proteins with structural and sequence variations. These variants may be regarded as “mutant” forms that replace their canonical histone counterparts in the nucleosomes. Specific post-translational modifications on the histone variants enable further chromatin complexity and regulate tissue-specific gene expression. The most common histone variants are from histone H2A, H2B, and linker histone H1 families. However, several variants of histone H3 variants are also...

Antibody Structure

Overview
Antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins (Ig), are essential players of the adaptive immune system. These antigen-binding proteins are produced by B cells and make up 20 percent of the total blood plasma by weight. In mammals, antibodies fall into five different classes, which each elicits a different biological response upon antigen binding.

The Structure of Intermediate Filaments01:19

The Structure of Intermediate Filaments

The intermediate filaments are one of three widely studied cytoskeletal filaments. They are so named as their diameter (10 nm) is in between that of microfilaments (7 nm) and the microtubules (25 nm).  These filaments are highly stable and can remain intact when exposed to high salt concentrations and detergents. These filaments are responsible for providing stability and mechanical support to the cells. They also help in cell adhesion and maintaining tissue integrity.

Structure of Amines01:19

Structure of Amines

The hybridized nitrogen atom in amines possesses a lone pair of electrons and is bound to three substituents with a bond angle of around 108°, which is less than the tetrahedral angle of 109.5°. However, the C–N–H bond angle is slightly larger at 112°, with a carbon–nitrogen bond length of 147 pm. This carbon–nitrogen bond length of of amines is longer than the carbon–oxygen bond of alcohols (143 pm) but shorter than alkanes’ carbon–carbon bond (154 pm). These aspects are illustrated in Figure...
Type IV Collagen of Basal Lamina01:05

Type IV Collagen of Basal Lamina

Type IV collagen is a 400 nm long, network-forming collagen that acts as a barrier between the epithelial and endothelial cells. Type IV collagen  forms the backbone of the basement membrane by scaffolding with laminin, entactin, proteoglycans, and fibronectin. Apart from rendering structural support to the basement membrane, it also helps entail signaling potentials necessary for both pathological and physiological functions.
A type IV collagen molecule has six alpha chains which can exist in...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Amaranth 7S-globulin, or vicilin, is composed of subunits with sequence similarities to sesame vicilin and other related proteins. This suggests amaranth vicilin originates from multiple gene families, classifying it within the vicilin group.

Area of Science:

  • * Plant protein biochemistry
  • * Molecular characterization of seed storage proteins

Background:

  • * 7S-globulin (vicilin) is a minor component of amaranth storage proteins.
  • * Previous characterization of amaranth vicilin structure and origin is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • * To provide new information on the amaranth 7S-globulin (vicilin).
  • * To determine the subunit composition and sequence homology of amaranth vicilin.
  • * To classify amaranth vicilin within the broader vicilin protein family.

Main Methods:

  • * Sedimentation analysis to determine the sedimentation coefficient.
  • * Mass spectrometry (MS) analysis of tryptic fragments to identify subunits.
  • * Sequence homology analysis to compare subunits with known vicilins.

Main Results:

  • * Amaranth vicilin exhibited a sedimentation coefficient of 8.6 ± 0.6 S.
  • * Composed of main subunits: 66, 52, 38, and 16 kDa.
  • * 52, 38, and 16 kDa subunits showed homology to sesame vicilin.
  • * 66 kDa subunit displayed similarity to a putative vicilin and convicilin family members.

Conclusions:

  • * Amaranth 7S-globulin molecules are likely composed of subunits from at least two gene families (66 kDa and 52 kDa primary products).
  • * Amaranth vicilin can be classified into the vicilin group, alongside pea, broad bean, and sesame vicilins.
