Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Otolaryngology
  • Congenital Deformities

Background:

  • Cryptotia is a congenital ear deformity where the upper auricle is buried.
  • A standardized surgical correction for cryptotia is currently lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a new surgical method for correcting cryptotia.
  • The aim is to achieve satisfactory auricular contour and inconspicuous scarring.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 8 patients with cryptotia treated between 2006 and 2009.
  • All patients underwent a novel surgical correction technique.
  • Follow-up duration ranged from 6 months to 1 year.

Main Results:

  • Successful correction of cryptotia in all patients.

  • Achieved good auricular contour with adequate skin for release, eliminating the need for grafts or flaps.
  • Resulted in deep auriculotemporal sulci and inconspicuous scars.
  • No complications or recurrences were observed.
  • Conclusions:

    • The new surgical method provides effective correction for cryptotia.
    • It yields excellent aesthetic outcomes, including natural contour and minimal scarring.
    • The technique is safe and durable, with no reported complications or recurrence.
