Summary

This study found that patients with myotonic dystrophy (MD) have lower triiodothyronine (FT3) levels and reduced thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) response to TRH. These findings suggest a mild TSH secretion dysfunction in MD patients.

Background:

  • Myotonic dystrophy (MD) is a multisystem disorder with potential endocrine implications.
  • Previous research has indicated possible thyroid dysfunction in MD patients, but findings are not conclusive.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential endocrine disturbances, specifically thyroid function, in patients diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy.
  • To compare thyroid hormone levels and thyroid function tests between MD patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 12 patients with myotonic dystrophy and 20 healthy controls.
  • Measured serum levels of T4, FT4, T3, FT3, TSH, TBG, and thyroid antibodies.
  • Assessed thyroidal radioiodine uptake and TSH response to TRH stimulation.
