Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of routine pathologic examination of breast capsulectomy specimens.
  • To determine if submitting these specimens for analysis is a necessary use of hospital resources.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 264 patients who underwent breast capsulectomy between 2000 and 2008 at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.
  • Pathology reports of 434 capsulectomy specimens were analyzed.
  • Patient data was identified using Current Procedural Terminology codes 19370 and 19371.

Main Results:

  • Of 434 specimens, 206 (78.0%) revealed benign capsules.
  • Additional findings like inflammation and necrosis were noted in 57 patients (21.6%).
  • Only one patient (0.4%) had carcinoma, which was known preoperatively; no new neoplasms or occult diseases were discovered.

Conclusions:

  • Routine pathologic examination of breast capsulectomy specimens yielded no clinically significant findings that altered patient treatment.
  • The cost associated with these routine examinations is substantial.
  • Discontinuing routine submission of breast capsulectomy specimens may reduce healthcare costs and conserve hospital resources.
