Acute psychological stress impairs medial prefrontal cortex (PFC) responses to rewards. This stress-induced change in PFC function may explain increased habitual and reward-seeking behaviors.

  • To examine how stress impacts reward-related activity in the ventral striatum and medial prefrontal cortex (PFC).

  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used in 27 healthy young women.
  • Participants performed a monetary incentive delay (MID) task under stress (aversive movie clips) and neutral conditions.
  • Physiological (cortisol, heart rate) and subjective measures confirmed successful stress induction.

  • Psychological stress significantly decreased reward-related activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (PFC).
  • Ventral striatal responses to rewards were not significantly affected by stress.
