Spectral imaging of O(2) infrared atmospheric airglow with an InGaAs array detector
This study monitored oxygen airglow using an InGaAs spectral imager, demonstrating potential for inferring rotational temperatures from twilight atmospheric emissions. Future improvements with area arrays are discussed.
Area of Science:
- Atmospheric physics and spectroscopy
- Airglow emissions monitoring
- Infrared spectral imaging
Background:
- Twilight airglow contains valuable atmospheric information.
- Oxygen (O2) Infrared Atmospheric (0-1) band emissions are key indicators.
- Previous monitoring methods faced limitations in sensitivity and spectral discrimination.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the feasibility of using a linear InGaAs array spectral imager.
- To monitor the O2 Infrared Atmospheric (0-1) band during twilight.
- To determine rotational temperatures from airglow spectra.
Main Methods:
- Utilized a linear Indium Gallium Arsenide (InGaAs) array.
- Employed an interference filter centered at 1.582 μm with a 1.0 nm bandwidth.
- Used a doublet imaging lens and a Fresnel lens for inhomogeneity smearing.
- Collected spectral data over Toronto in October 1994.
Main Results:
- The InGaAs spectral imager demonstrated sufficient sensitivity and spectral discrimination.
- Potential to infer meaningful rotational temperatures from O2 airglow was shown.
- Contamination from hydroxyl (OH) airglow spectra was managed.
Conclusions:
- The linear InGaAs array is a viable tool for twilight airglow monitoring.
- The system shows promise for atmospheric temperature retrieval.
- Area InGaAs arrays could offer further improvements in data acquisition and analysis.
