Background:

  • Retrospective review of 19 pediatric SILS cases performed between October 2009 and January 2010.
  • Procedures utilized only standard 3-mm and 5-mm instruments via a conventional access technique.

  • 19 SILS procedures were successfully completed in children aged 3-15 years, including appendectomy, nephrectomy, and cholecystectomy.
  • One conversion to conventional laparoscopy occurred during a splenectomy; all patients recovered well without complications.

Conclusions:

  • Conventional instruments are technically feasible for pediatric SILS, encompassing both simple and complex procedures.
  • This approach could enhance SILS accessibility in pediatric surgery by reducing reliance on specialized tools.
