Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression is uncommon in nonepithelial ovarian cancers. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed low COX-2 prevalence in granulosa cell tumors and germ cell tumors, suggesting limited therapeutic potential.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is implicated in various cancers.
  • Its role in nonepithelial ovarian malignancies remains underexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the expression of COX-2 in nonepithelial ovarian tumors.
  • To determine the frequency of COX-2 positivity in granulosa cell tumors and germ cell tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical staining for COX-2 was performed on archival tissue samples.
  • Diagnosis of nonepithelial ovarian malignancies was reconfirmed.
  • Staining intensity and proportion of positive cells were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-six cases of nonepithelial ovarian malignancies were analyzed.
  • COX-2 expression was detected in 5 of 16 (31.2%) granulosa cell tumors.
  • One of 6 immature teratomas showed positive COX-2 staining; no dysgerminomas were positive.

Conclusions:

  • COX-2 expression is infrequent in nonepithelial ovarian malignancies.
  • These findings suggest limited utility of targeting COX-2 in these tumor types.
