Summary

Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEpo) therapy improved sexual function and well-being in male hemodialysis patients. However, this therapy did not significantly alter key sex hormone levels in the study group.

  • A cohort of seven male hemodialysis patients with stable sexual partners were studied.
  • Sexual function and hormone levels were assessed before and after 3-10 months of rHuEpo therapy.
  • A self-administered questionnaire evaluated sexual function, including libido and erection; hormone levels (testosterone, estradiol, prolactin, LH, FSH) were measured.

    • Hematocrit levels significantly increased from 22.2% to 30.6% with rHuEpo therapy.

    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms behind improved sexual function during rHuEpo treatment in this population.
