Summary

T helper 17 (Th17) cells are involved in sarcoidosis pathogenesis, infiltrating lung tissues and contributing to granuloma formation. Their recruitment may be driven by the CCL20 chemokine, suggesting a role in disease progression.

Main Results:

  • Th17 cells were found in peripheral blood and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of sarcoidosis patients.
  • Interleukin-17 (IL-17)-producing CD4(+) T cells infiltrated sarcoid tissues, and IL-17 was expressed by macrophages in granulomas.
  • Th17 cells showed chemotaxis towards CCL20, the CCR6 ligand, suggesting a mechanism for recruitment.

Conclusions:

  • CCL20 chemokine may drive the recruitment of Th17 cells in sarcoidosis pathogenesis.
