Abstract:
This Focus Issue of Science Signaling complements the Science Special Issue on Metabolism (http://www.sciencemag.org/special/metabolism) by turning attention to the pathways and molecules involved in controlling cellular metabolic processes. Highlights include an unexpected role in triggering apoptosis for the insulin receptor and the related IGF-1 receptor (known for their roles in metabolism and growth), a role for lipids as cellular sensors of glucose metabolism, and a mechanism whereby cells can survive oxidative stress by shifting the activity of the cell's protein degradation complex.

Introduction to Metabolism
Metabolic States of the Body: The Postabsorptive State
Initially, glycogen stored in the liver is broken down to release glucose into the bloodstream, while glycogen in the muscles is broken down to supply glucose for energy directly within the muscle cells. As glycogen stores diminish,...

Overview of Metabolism
Plant Metabolism
Sunlight, the primary source of energy in plants, is first absorbed by the chlorophyll pigments present in their leaves. Plants then use this energy to carry out photosynthesis, where water is oxidized into oxygen and carbon dioxide...
