Summary

Congenital ranula, a rare developmental abnormality, can be detected during routine prenatal ultrasounds. Surgical intervention after birth leads to excellent outcomes for affected infants.

  • Congenital ranulas are rare cystic masses in the floor of the mouth, originating from developmental anomalies of the sublingual salivary gland.
  • Prenatal diagnosis of congenital anomalies is crucial for appropriate management planning and parental counseling.

Observation:

  • A case of congenital ranula was identified via routine prenatal ultrasonography at 21 weeks of gestation.
  • Serial ultrasound examinations confirmed stable cyst size and position without impacting fetal growth or amniotic fluid levels.
  • The fetal karyotype was determined to be normal, ruling out chromosomal abnormalities.

Findings:

  • Prenatal ultrasonography is effective in diagnosing congenital ranula during the second trimester of pregnancy.
