Background:

  • A large-scale experiment involved translocating southern rock lobsters (Jasus edwardsii) to assess its viability as a fishery management tool.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To enhance depleted southern rock lobster populations and improve fishery yield and sustainability.
  • To test the resilience of Jasus edwardsii to a changing climate through assisted migration.

Main Methods:

  • Approximately 10,000 pale-coloured lobsters were moved from deep water to inshore sites in Tasmania and South Australia.
  • Growth rates and reproductive status of translocated lobsters were monitored and compared to resident populations.

Main Results:

  • Translocated pale female lobsters grew significantly faster (4x) than resident pale lobsters and (2x) faster than resident red lobsters.
  • About 30% of translocated lobsters temporarily deferred reproduction, yet still exhibited increased growth rates compared to the source population.
  • Despite a one-year reproductive hiatus, increased growth in translocated lobsters is expected to boost future fecundity due to larger body volume.

Conclusions:

  • Assisted migration successfully improved growth and egg production in southern rock lobsters, despite an initial stress response.
  • This translocation strategy offers a viable tool for enhancing fishery production, sustainability, and climate resilience.
